Means of transportation in Madagascar:How to move from point A to point B?

 

Madagascar, the enchanting island in the Indian Ocean, boasts not only unique flora and fauna but also a diverse array of transportation options for curious tourists. Navigating this captivating destination requires a keen understanding of the available means of transportation, each offering a distinct experience and revealing the island's cultural and geographical richness.

While in the capital:

As I wrote in my article on Do's and Don'ts at the TNR airport, (here ) it is recommended to arrange your pick-up from the Airport to your hotel in advance.

Here are some tips on how to move from point A to point B in the capital:

The bad news is , we don't have Uber (not yet 😉) . But the good news is , we have similar services. I usually use E-vtc by esanandro Just like Uber but I would recommend you to call them instead of using their app. You can find there number on their Instagram page .

There is also Mobility . Not only they have cars but they also have motorbikes for those who want to reach their destination faster ( I have to admit, the traffic jam in the capital is awful mostly at certain hours. So going by motorbike is faster ) .

 
You can also rent a car. With or without a driver. I would suggest you to rent a car with a driver though. Driving in Tana is not a piece of cake.
There are also public transportation like buses but I do not recommend that for foreigners.
You can also hire a taxi but it is better to ask for a trustworthy driver's contact from your hotel . At least they will not charge you more than the fair price.

Traveling all around the island

 Air Travel:

Madagascar's major cities and tourist hubs are well-connected by domestic flights. The primary airports, such as Ivato International Airport in Antananarivo, facilitate seamless entry and exit for travelers. Regional airlines allows you to explore the farthest reaches of the island.

 However, I have to tell you that there are frequent flight delays so please consider that in your planing.  Helicopter tours are also available, offering a breathtaking perspective of Madagascar's varied landscapes, from lush rainforests to pristine beaches.

Road Trips:

For those seeking an immersive experience, road trips present an ideal option. The island features a network of roads that wind through picturesque landscapes, connecting charming villages and bustling towns. Travelers can rent cars or hire local drivers to navigate the sometimes challenging terrain. The famous RN7 highway takes you on a journey from Antananarivo to Toliara, passing through diverse ecosystems and showcasing the island's cultural richness.

Taxi-Brousse Adventures:

For a taste of local life, adventurous tourists can embark on a taxi-brousse journey. These shared minivans serve as the backbone of public transportation, offering an authentic and economical way to travel between towns and cities. While not the most luxurious option, taxi-brousses provide an opportunity to interact with locals and witness daily life up close.

There are different type of taxi-brousses. There are the "regular" ones that might not leave on time or that might not be comfortable; and there are the premium or VIP ones like  Cotisse and Soatrans plus( those are the ones I use the most ) that leave on time and that have more comfortable chairs and wifi .

 Railway Experiences:

Madagascar's railway system, though limited, offers a nostalgic and scenic mode of transportation. The Fianarantsoa-Côte Est Railway, for example, takes passengers on a picturesque journey through the highlands, showcasing breathtaking landscapes and rural communities. Given its island nature, Madagascar boasts an extensive coastline, and maritime transportation plays a crucial role.
