Is it safe to travel to Madagascar?

Is it safe to travel to Madagascar now ?

Dozens of people asked me this question today , right after I started this blog.

Travel safety depends on different factors

Of course , safety is key whenever one is planning a trip. But it is important to mention that travel safety can be influenced by various factors, including political stability, health conditions, and natural disasters.  We all remember that recently, due to covid-19, travel to any country had been prohibited. To determine if it's safe to travel to any  country , you should consult up-to-date sources such as travel advisories from government agencies, news reports, and health organizations.

Health factors

You might have read about outbreak of plague in Madagascar. Efforts have been made by the government with the support of the WHO and other international organizations, and we don't have anymore plague cases here.
Malaria can be an issue here , make sure you sleep under a mosquito net mostly in the east coast and always have a mosquito repellant with you .
If you are having a treatment, make sure you have all your medicines with you . There are hospitals and private clinics major cities, make sure to spot the one nearer to your hotel when you check-in .Ensure you have updated vaccinations and health precautions recommended for Madagascar. Consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice based on your health status and travel plans.

Local security

Like in all countries in the world , there are places where it's not safe to be.  Stay informed about the areas you plan to visit, and be aware of any travel restrictions or safety concerns. However, I would advise to be careful while walking in Antananarivo, the capital. Connect with local authorities and communities to gather insights into the current situation.

Political stability

Yes, Madagascar has experienced periods of political unrest in the past. BUT, our election took place peacefully few weeks ago. We have a re-elected President now and and I believe things will be fine.

Climate factors

Natural disasters such as cyclones are not uncommon in Madagascar. The cyclone season is between February and April but a cyclone rarely touches the whole country. Stay informed about weather conditions and potential risks, especially if you plan to visit during cyclone seasons. Additionally, verify the reliability of transportation infrastructure, as disruptions can occur due to weather-related events.

Lastly, have a comprehensive travel insurance plan that covers potential risks, including health emergencies and trip cancellations. This provides an additional layer of protection in unforeseen circumstances.

In summary,  it is safe to travel to Madagascar but safety considerations for traveling here involve monitoring health advisories, checking political stability, assessing natural disaster risks, staying informed about local security conditions, and having appropriate vaccinations and insurance coverage. Always consult with reliable and up-to-date sources to make informed decisions based on the current situation. And last but not least , Enjoy your trip 😉. Do not hesitate to ask for some tips.
